APDA 2025 Rhode Island Optimism Walk & 5K Fun Run

High Tide

Our Story

We chose our team name "High Tide" because our connection to Parkinson's is through our Dad/Grandpop.

Through a connection from a professor at Stonehill college, Emily was introduced to the Massachusetts chapter of APDA. The community of people we have met have been inspiring.

There are not enough words to describe the optimism we have found within the APDA community: from the Optimism Walks to Magic of Hope Galas to the educational programs offered both virtually and in-person, APDA covers far more than just the basics. APDA provides an avenue of light and hope.

We have been volunteering with APDA for four years this December, however, this year marked a turn in our journeys as Emily completed her Master's Thesis this April. Although not within her comfort zone, she vulnerably shared what this achievement meant for her emotionally online. Please find that post copied below.

This organization would not be able to create the change and impact it does without the generosity of donators. We hope you will consider donating to this incredible organization!

April 11, 2025:

While I normally don’t share this part of me online, it feels fitting to share it this year.

This past year, I had the privilege of presenting part of my thesis on Parkinson’s disease and communication at the 2024 ASHA Convention in November, and this past Monday, I presented the final version to my thesis committee and members of the Northeastern community. It's safe to say this has been the proudest moment of my academic journey so far, and it was a reminder that turning grief into purpose can be powerful beyond words.

Today is World Parkinson’s Day, and it means the world to me. My grandpop, who I’m lucky enough to call my role model, lived with Parkinson’s. Even as the disease progressed, he met each day with strength, humility, and love. He showed me what true resilience looks like, and that kind of courage stays with me always.

Though he’s no longer here, I hope to carry his legacy in everything I do, especially in my journey with Parkinson’s research and advocacy. Being part of this work isn’t just professional for me; it’s deeply personal. It’s a way of honoring him and standing with the countless families who walk this path every day.

Alongside the research, I’m incredibly grateful to volunteer with the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA; @apda.ma.chapter and @apdarhodeisland), an organization creating real change through community support, education, and outreach. Giving back to the Parkinson’s community through movement and connection has been one of the most meaningful parts of my life, and I know there are so many more meaningful moments to come.
