Acierno for Advocacy

I joined the Brain Injury Alliance of Nebraska Board about five years ago.  Prior to that time I had served as the Chief Medical Officer and Director of the Division of Public Health for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.  My medical background coupled with my experience in public health provided me some background on the important work being done to assist those living with brain injuries and their families.  Traumatic brain injury has been a focus of public health for many years.

Brain injuries are varied, complex and have multiple causes including accidents, falls, assaults and traffic accidents.  These injuries impact people of all ages and can range from mild to severe.  As a result, individual needs are unique and pose for significant challenges for the individuals and families.  A brain injury can also result from medical events such as a stroke.  The consequences of brain injuries are profound and have substantial impact on patients, families, and caregivers.  The impact is varied and ranges from medical care and employment issues, to financial burden.  Unfortunately, many individuals may suffer in silence because the condition can be misdiagnosed or misunderstood.

Serving on the Board of BIA-NE provides an opportunity for me to help assist individuals and families with accessing appropriate resources and ultimately improve outcomes, futures, and quality of life for those impacted.

While I’d rather be seeing you in person as we raise funds to support the important work of BIA-NE, due to the current pandemic I am asking you to please support this important work through our virtual fund raising effort.
