This year’s Bark on the Boards isn’t just a great event, it’s a movement for compassion, hope, and lifesaving change. With your help, we can go even further to create a community where every animal has a safe and loving home. Animals just like Theo, whose story is below;
Theo's story has pulled on the heartstrings of staff and volunteers alike since arriving at Brandywine Valley's Animal Rescue Center in Georgetown, Delaware. She was just one of 26 dogs confiscated from a life that never expanded past the length of her chain; These dogs had been left outside tethered to trees for their whole lives. They never got to understand what it truly means to be dog, let alone a cherished house pet. They arrived at the Animal Rescue Center frightened, filthy, and having had no socialization. Sadly, many of the dogs that came from her situation were brought to us blind, as well- which they likely inherited genetically from the generations of recessive breeding that had been conducted on that property. These were dogs who were in no way treated as actual living things, rather lawn ornaments and "cash-cows" instead. ButTheo refuses to let her past define her. And thanks to the incredible team at the Animal Rescue Center, none of these dogs from her situation let the past define them, either. They have begun to learn how to trust, how to play, and how to actually let themselves be loved without fear- and how understand that they don’t have to give us a single thing in return for it.
As of now, over HALF of the dogs from that case have been adopted! These sweet animals can rest easy knowing that, from now on, they don’t have to be ANYTHING except the affectionate companions they have already become. And that is the kind of happy ending we are able to achieve through our work, all thanks to those who donate, volunteer, and support the organization.
This sweet girl in particular is thriving in foster, where she has proved herself to be an outstanding house pet, despite never even having been in a home before.
She is quickly learning new commands, has mastered housetraining, and has even made a "Feline-Friend" along the way. Theo's Cuddle-Bug personality is already shining through as we navigate her journey to find her forever home. She is currently available for adoption through Brandywine Valley SPCA's Animal Rescue Center in Georgetown, Delaware.
