1 in 100 are born with CHD. At our 20 week ultrasound, we discovered that Ben would be born with several severe Congenital Heart Defects and within days of birth, would need open heart surgery and 2 additional surgeries over the coming 3 years. These surgeries aren't a cure, they don't 'fix' his heart, they are palliative surgeries but have allowed and will allow Ben to live; continued intervention will be needed as he gets older -and this is why we're here today. 

Research is critical for Ben's future and the Children's Heart Foundation has continuously supported promising research that gives our family hope every single day, especially the 'Fontan pump' (a life changing device for Fontan patients).  Before Ben's Fontan, his surgeon told us he'd very likely need some type of 'Fontan pump' to ensure better blood and oxygen flow throughout his body and to relieve the pressure on his right ventricle. 

Ben is a real life superhero; he's undergone 3 open heart surgeries and months in-patient. But CHD will never define him; he loves to dance, sing, read, run around the park and consistently asks for a cookie, he's an amazing kid and has taught us so much already.
