Mom's Story
I know a version of this story is all too familiar to too many people reading it, but before you donate, I thought you should know why I do this...
Mom started not feeling in the fall of 2022. Despite having battled an unrelated auto-immune disorder for nearly 15 years, she'd been otherwise healthy.
And then, in December, 5 consecutive Thursdays changed life forever...
- A trip to her pulmonologist
- A positive biopsy result
- A trip to the ER
- The decision to take her home into hospice care
- Her passing to a place hopefully without any of the horrors of cancer
As for why I've found some sort of calling to come back each year for the GFC marathon? I think the below note, which I wrote to myself ~month after she passed, probably sums it up best...
But then I think that refusing to relive it wouldnt be fair to mom. What she went through was so horrible. And to not think about it or to try to forget it feels unfair to her.
I also selfishly feel like there were things that I did over the past couple of months that shouldn't be forgotten either. I had my days, but I also felt like I was giving every last ounce of myself to mom. I felt like I had to do things no son should ever have to do. Maybe things that no human should have to do. And again, to forget those things, would be a disservice to what I was able to personally do for mom.
So to anyone reading who can relate, I'm sorry we're a part of the same club. But I hope we can all find ways to ensure memories are everlasting and find strength from our toughest days.
