From day one of my teaching career, I have put language development first. Through the development of language our students can become advocates for their own learning. Just as VOCEL chooses to emphasize language, I foster learning through curiosity and communication. If we give students the necessary skills and help support a positive mindset around school and learning, they will be able to find solutions to problems independently, they will be able to follow their interests and passions, and they will have the words to communicate in a socially and emotionally responsible way.

However, it is not enough to focus on literacy in early childhood as a whole, but more specifically through a child’s early experiences before a child reaches the age of three or even two years old. For this reason, amongst many others, I strongly support the whole child approach that VOCEL implements through their Child Parent Academy. The learning does not begin and end in the classroom, but we need to give parents the tools to promote their child’s education if we want to see exponential results - which we know are necessary to close the gap!
