The Early Years Matter!
Multiple disciplines, such as Psychology, Policy, and Biology, find evidence that the early years are critical in a child's development - key milestones in cognitive skill development are accomplished during this period and bear lasting impact on a child's capabilities. In particular, the diversity and extent of language exposure has unparalleled impact in nourishing a young child's mind.
VOCEL is a non-profit based in Chicago, dedicated to providing young children with parent coaching and creative early learning resources rooted in language growth and social-emotional support. This kind of support is critical in supporting children from disadvantaged homes, preparing them with the skills they need to thrive in schools. By working with young children, the hope is to brigde gaps in educational access from an early age, before they widen and calcify.
As an undergraduate who studied Psychology and Public Policy, this cause is incredibly meaningful to me. Psychology finds overwhelming evidence supporting the need for such language-based resources. Public Policy prizes programs that alleviate inequity in a foresighted manner, this is not only an investment in the child's future but also the most cost-effective way to pave deep, effective impact.
Please consider donating to VOCEL - this organization is doing important and impressive work!
