The Benefits of Animal Care for Humans

Hi! My name is Andy and I'm an anthropology student at the University of Ottawa. I've always loved animals and grew up volunteering at my local shelters. However, I did not realize just how bad the situation in Canada is for animal's until I attended University. At uOttawa I decided to attend a animal law course and I learned that Canada has some of the worst laws for animal protection in the Western world. We’d love to believe that the loving family-owned farm still existed. It’s part of our childhood and we grew up with the green pasture and free-roaming animal images on our TV. But gone are the days of happy animals living in a barn-like in Charlotte’s Web. The truth is that industrial farming and greedy corporations are severely abusing animals on a daily basis. Since animals are regarded as property in Canada they have no legal protections. Under the law, people have a right to do whatever they want with their property. And ag-gag laws make it illegal to report abuse going on in industrial farms. Whistleblowers and journalists are punished with thousand-dollar fines and even jail time. Ag-gag laws are not made to protect local small family-owned farms, they were created to protect corporations that own industrial farms.

Canadian laws basically don't protect animals (like dogs, cats, horses, pigs, and cows) from abuse. This is a sad reality that needs to change which is why I joined Animal Justice. However, some greedy corporations and politicians don't want the public to know the amount of abuse going on in factory farms so they silence whistleblowers, journalists, and animal lawyers by using ag-gag laws. Whether or not you love animals I believe that ag-gag laws violate the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. As Canadians, we have freedom of the press and other media communication. Ending ag-gag laws is not just important for animals to have a better life, but also for Canadians. My academic background has also taught me that humans should have a relationship with their food. In our Contemporary society, we have no idea how our food is made and where it comes from which is allowing abuse to happen and damaging our health. I want to live in a country where I have access to important information and am not just mindlessly making the rich richer. You deserve to know information that will influence your choices. It is unacceptable to lie to people about the products they are putting into their bodies.
