I'm Everfair's author and the editor of New Suns

My Writing Goals

I need to finish my draft of Everfair's sequel, Kinning!  I've finished 12 of the 16 chapters that's going to take.  So that's four more chapters to write in six more weeks--can I do what must be done?

Removing their lone lightsponge from his shirt, Tink lowered it to soak in a puddle and activate.  He squeezed out the excess water and returned it to its former home, his body and clothes serving as its shade.

Soon the tingling air of the woods encroached more closely, and soon after that it enveloped them.  Tink wanted to rest here, to lie among the enchantingly damp fallen leaves as if he, too, had come to the exact right place.  But the road.  The mission.  The spores.

The target.  At last they’d reached it.  Fragrant, new-turned earth, steaming with life, sat wetly mounded over the trench in which the cable traveled from its landing station in the bay to the terminal house on the forest’s far side.

He waited for Raghu, who lagged behind the twins and their captive.  “Tools?”  From a sling over his left shoulder the man removed a pair of collapsed shovels.

What I Write

I write lots of science fiction, fantasy, horror.  Also lots of related nonfiction.  I seem to have a predilection for representing nonstandard speech patterns.

Publications List

My publications list is long and unwieldy.  There's a pretty good rundown on my website, and Terry Bisson put a nice bibliography in the collection of my work he edited, Talk Like a Man.

Books I've written, cowritten, edited, or coedited include Writing the Other: A Practical Approach;  Something More and MoreWisCon Chronicles 5: Writing and Racial Identity; Strange Matings: Science Fiction, Feminism, African American Voices, and Octavia E. Butler; and Filter House; all from Aqueduct Press.  From Tor there's Everfair.  From Dark Moon Books there's A Primer to Nisi Shawl.  From Rosarium there's Stories for Chip: A Tribute to Samuel R. Delany.  From Solaris there's New Suns: Speculative Fiction by People of Color.  From PM Press there's the aforementioned Talk Like a Man.

I have a Middle Grade fantasy titled Speculation forthcoming from Lee & Low Books.

I've also edited special issues of magazines, in part or in whole, and then there are all these short stories.  I mean dozens.

So, yeah.  Check out my website.
