I first discovered NYSX four or five years ago thanks to ShakesBEER, a series of pub crawls around New York City where actors perform scenes in each bar - running across tables, spilling drinks, heckling strangers...
A few drinks and four hilarious performances later, I was hooked. I've been to almost every one since. I'm always astounded how this team manages to make Shakespeare incredibly accessible through a casual setting and its focus on community. It's one of my favorite things to do in the city, and I try to get everyone I know to give it a chance.
As if quarterly Shakespearean pub crawls weren't enough, NYSX has A LOT more to offer. There are mainstage productions (A Midsummer Night’s Dream coming this winter!) as well as The Sonnet Project, a reimagining of the sonnets through film, all around the world. These continue the theme of innovative, accessible, and community-driven interpretations of Shakespeare's work.
Finally, INTERSECTIONS takes the NY theatre scene to other places that may not have access to it, while Freestyle Labs mixes performance with town hall discussion to tackle issues facing performance in a complex sociopolitical landscape.
