Why I Walk

Preeclampsia? A word that I've never heard, a hypertensive disorder that I should've known about, but didn't ... The word that would forever change my life.

As a first time mother, I did not know about Preeclampsia my entire pregnancy yet I lived it. As I briefly reflect on my short pregnancy journey, my first trimester was the best. On the first day of my second trimester up until I reached 29 weeks is when everything changed. I was sick all day everyday, throwing up water, food, air, medicine, you name it! I experienced stroke level blood pressure levels at 23 weeks and hospitalization, yet was released with no monitoring. I experienced giving birth at 29 weeks. I experienced death during an emergency c-section. I became apart of the sisterhoods nobody wants to be apart of: Nicu Moms and Maternal Near Misses.

After becoming a maternal near miss, my mind kept wandering to If preeclampsia is a pregnancy related disease then why are pregnant women not aware until it happens to them? We are educated in grade school about menstrual cycles, adolescence, or even safe sex, but the line is drawn at pregnancy related diseases. Even college health classes don't touch on this as if it is a taboo. It doesn't just stop there, take into perspective the physical and psychological effect after all is done.

That is why I vowed to use my testimony to become The Voice of Preeclampsia and make an impact because if I can't personally save every woman from this scary experience, I at least want to make them aware of the signs so they can advocate for themselves.

With that being said, PLEASE JOIN ME IN THE FIGHT TO SAVE OUR MOMMIES AND BABIES!
