2026 Dempsey Challenge

I'm raising money for the Dempsey Center!

Two summers ago my daughters and granddaughter and I had a terrific time running the 5K Boilermaker. Four months later, out of the blue, Amanda, my oldest, had trouble walking. A short walk became an excruciatingly painful trek. After a period of uncertainty, she was diagnosed with breast cancer that had spread to her bones.

As soon as the diagnosis became clear, Amanda, who lives in Portland, Maine, was put in touch with the Demspey Center, a free, comprehensive cancer care nonprofit founded by the actor Patrick Dempsey, who grew up in Maine. The Dempsey Center improves life for people impacted by cancer and their families through physical, emotional, social and familial therapy--all at no cost.

Last year Amanda walked the 5K Dempsey Challenge using a walker. Because of the Depmsey Center, she now walks her dog on rough terrain using just hiking poles for balance. She along with her family and friends will be doing the 5K walk again using just her hiking poles. The change has been immense.
