Last year my sister-in-law Amanda Brokaw was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer that had spread to her bones. She could barely walk and struggled with daily life. The Dempsey center provided free life changing care that helped her build strength and improved her quality of life. This summer we climbed a mountain together!
In Amanda's own words: When I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer last year I thought that my life was over. Through the strength-training, wellness, and nutrition services that I had access to at The Dempsey Center, I was able to go from not being able to walk at all to completing the 5k walk using my walker. This year my goal is to complete the walk on my own two feet, with hiking sticks. I cannot say enough about how joyous and positive the day made me feel and I would love to invite you to join Team Puffin 2026 by coming to Maine and walking with us or making a financial contribution.
The Dempsey Challenge is the premiere fundraising event for the Dempsey Center, a nonprofit founded by actor Patrick Dempsey. The Dempsey Center makes life better for people impacted by cancer by easing the side effects of cancer by improving their physical, emotional, social, familial, and functional well-being at any point in their cancer journey--all at no cost.
