For Uncle Renee

On March 26, 1998, my Uncle Renee lost his life to complications from AIDS. I was only 15 years old, still trying to understand grief, love, and why life can sometimes feel so unfair.

Before he passed, he told me something I have carried in my heart ever since:
“I hope you meet someone who will truly love you.”

At the time, I didn’t fully understand the weight of those words. But they stayed with me.

Fifteen years later, I met my husband. And in a moment that still gives me chills, I discovered he was born on March 26 — the very same day my Uncle Renee passed away. Somehow, it felt like my uncle’s love and blessing had found its way back to me.

Today, I walk in memory of Renee Ayala.
I walk for the lives lost.
For the families forever changed.
For those still fighting.
And for a future where no one has to suffer alone.

Uncle Renee’s story is not just about loss. It’s about love, remembrance, and hope.

If you’re able, please consider donating to the Honolulu AIDS Walk. Every contribution helps support education, prevention, care, and compassion for those affected by HIV/AIDS here in our community.

Thank you for helping me honor his memory.
