Meet our Honorary Captain - Dionis

Five-year-old Dionis from Queensbury, NY, was severely injured in an accident in November 2022. For several days, his family faced the terrifying possibility that he might never walk again.

He spent over two months in the pediatric intensive care unit at Albany Medical Center, with his family constantly by his side. From there, he was transferred to Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital, where he amazed everyone by re-learning how to talk, walk—and even run. He was discharged in January 2023 and continued his recovery through outpatient therapy.

By the start of the 2023–2024 school year, Dionis was back in the classroom. Today, he is thriving. He loves school, playing with his two older sisters and younger brother, and being outside as much as possible.

Building on Love was introduced to Dionis’ family by his medical team at Albany Med. We were honored to support them with three months of rent and auto loan payments, and to provide holiday gifts and household items during an incredibly difficult time.

Dionis first joined the Capital Cup for Kids as an Honorary Captain—and the players surprised his family with a gift to help them move into a larger apartment. We’re grateful the family continues to be part of this event. Their strength and spirit inspire us all… and they bring so much joy to the rink.
