For the past four and a half years I have had the privilege to work in the Department of Social Work MSW Program at CSUSM. I've always valued human relationships and serving others, but little did I know how passionate I'd become about things like social justice and advocacy.
Social work is a profession aimed at helping and empowering the most disadvantaged and vulnerable populations in our society. MSW students complete significant internships (over 1,000 hours) over two years at sites that include hospitals, schools, mental health agencies, retirement and senior communities, military and veterans services, government and county providers, drug and alcohol facilities, hospice and home care, family and child services, juvenile and adult corrections, outreach and prevention services. Students do not receive compensation for these internships, and many students would greatly benefit from stipend funds to assist them in successfully completing these internships. In addition to the time spent and work performed in these community agencies, students also incur transportation costs as they commute to these agencies 2-3 days each week during the academic year. Based on interests, donors could provide stipends for students in certain domains of internship practice or donate to the general MSW stipend fund.
