Life as we know it can change in a minute. A life-altering diagnosis such as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, or lung disease affects not only the body, but the mind and spirit too. Anyone who experiences a serious disease needs specialized, whole-person care that helps them cope and live fully during every stage of an illness. That is palliative care.
Palliative care focuses on managing the physical symptoms, and the emotional and spiritual distress, of serious illness. As our population ages, more people will need palliative care – but there are not enough healthcare professionals trained to provide it.
The CSU Shiley Institute for Palliative Care, located on the campus of Cal State San Marcos, provides online education for nurses, physicians, social workers, and chaplains on the front lines to deliver the best possible care for people with serious and life-limiting illness. Our courses prepare healthcare professionals with the necessary skills to effectively manage pain, ease psychosocial suffering, and support patient decision making ensuring patients and their family members experience good quality of life.
Your donation will fund Palliative Care Education Scholarships that help make these programs accessible to healthcare professionals who may not otherwise be able to afford them.
