Internships are imperative for college students as they transition into the workforce. National statistics show that over 70% of college students who complete an internship are offered a job at that company/organization (NACE’s 2019 Internship & Co-op Survey Report) with a retention rate of 74.1% after one year (NACE Class of 2019 Student Survey). According to the 2019 NACE Job Outlook report, “Companies reported that students having completed an internship… is an extreme influence in hiring one applicant over another.” But more than 70% of the internships offered to CSUSM students are unpaid. An unpaid internship can create a financial burden for college students, who incur costs such as transportation, new clothing, food and even daycare. Some must choose to give up a paying job in order to complete an unpaid internship, putting them deeper in debt. Some college students may already be struggling to make financial ends meet due to other life obligations.
With your assistance, the Internship Foundation Fund will reduce the financial barriers that may affect low-income students by giving them the opportunity to participate in a highly impactful experience while preparing them for a future career. Your donation will go directly toward funding the Internship Foundation Fund.
