I'm raising money for #LightUpMBC to benefit METAvivor!

Every day 117 people in the U.S. die of metastatic breast cancer (MBC), also known as Stage 4, where the breast cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Funding MBC research is the only way to find a cure!

ABOUT ME

It has been almost 5 years since I was diagnosed with Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) at the age of 36. At the time, I was a very healthy, active, full-time working parent who had recently moved into my dream home with my husband and two kids. My diagnosis came as a complete shock. I had metastases on my liver, multiple bones, and lymph nodes.

A little over a year into treatment, I experienced a seizure, which led to the discovery of a cancerous brain tumor. Radiation was successful in stopping the tumor from growing, shrinking it and killing the cancer. Unfortunately, the side effects of radiation included swelling in my brain, which required daily use of steroids for well over two years. I have had several additional seizures, each occurring after trying to tapper off the steroids. In April 2025, we decided to add another immunotherapy drug to address the ongoing swelling. After 4 treatments, we finally saw a decrease in the size of the swelling. This has allowed me to remain off the steroids, which is a huge help to my quality of life.

This journey requires frequent monitoring—brain MRIs every 2 months and PET scans every 4 months.  I also have Echocardiograms and Dexa scans to monitor my heart and bone health. I still receive IV chemo treatment every 3 weeks and take a daily chemo pill at home.  The side effects of this treatment regimen are hardest the week after treatment.  My body isn't as strong as it once was.

On July 1, 2025, I began disability retirement after working for 16 years in a career I loved. This was not an easy decision, but it became necessary so I could focus fully on managing my health.

People often ask me:
When will you finish treatment?
Are you in remission?
Have you beaten cancer?

The truth is, Stage 4 MBC is not curable. I will always be in treatment—until there are no treatments left. This is the reality of MBC.

But I’m not giving up hope. I am filled with determination and purpose. I continue to live, love, and advocate with everything I have. And I believe in the power of research to bring about new options—and one day, a cure.

WHAT IS #LightUpMBC ?

The #LightUpMBC campaign is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness and funds for metastatic breast cancer (MBC) research to benefit METAvivor. Held annually in October, the campaign partners with hundreds of iconic landmarks around the world to illuminate in the symbolic MBC awareness colors of green, teal, and pink. By uniting patients, families, and supporters, #LightUpMBC shines a spotlight on the urgent need for more research and resources to improve outcomes for MBC patients.

#LightUpMBC Live is a dynamic virtual event that serves as the centerpiece of the #LightUpMBC campaign, bringing together the metastatic breast cancer (MBC) community and its supporters for an evening of storytelling, inspiration, and impact. Hosted annually on October 13 on Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, this live-streamed program features powerful stories from MBC patients and their families, musical performances, and appearances by special guests who amplify the mission of raising awareness and funds for MBC research. #LightUpMBC Live provides a platform for education and advocacy, highlighting the urgency of funding scientific breakthroughs for the most advanced stage of breast cancer.
