Raising funds for metastatic breast cancer research

Since Dare passed away, I have been trying to figure out the "why" and what good there will ever be from this. Truth is, I will never know the why, and I don't think there is any good, but yesterday it clicked in my mind that I can choose to live in those upsetting truths, or choose joy by taking action. After researching different organizations, I found this one to feel like it's the best fit.

I'm raising money for #LightUpMBC to benefit METAvivor!

Every day 117 people in the U.S. die of metastatic breast cancer (MBC), also known as Stage 4, where the breast cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Funding MBC research is the only way to find a cure!

ABOUT ME

Below is the post I made on October 2nd, 2025...

“I am not okay

I'm barely getting by

I'm losing track of days

And losing sleep at night”

These lyrics have been on loop in my head ever since I found out two days ago that one of my best friends passed away on Sunday.

Dare and I were both born in 1988.

We started working at the same company in 2018- this is when I had the privilege of meeting her and becoming friends with her.

We both had our kids in 2021.

She was beautiful, inside and out. She used to love to do Piyo, run (often while seeing bears on her runs ?), and would go to the gym when we were at work conferences. ?

Her heart was huge. While she was also pregnant, she drove four hours to be at my baby shower. This year, while undergoing treatment, she and Colin drove 4 hours to be at Kansas’s party. She gave best gifts- one is pictured below and will forever be cherished. ?

We complemented each other so well during meetings at work because she could talk and talk and talk while I would sit there quietly and be the listener.

She was extremely smart, but not boastful about it, but used it to help others, like me… many times.

We were each other’s confidants and support during hard times of getting pregnant, and were there to celebrate with each other when we finally got to experience becoming mothers.

I am angry, confused, and hurt. Cancer sucks. SUCKS!!

All the people who loved her should not have been able to be there with her boy today, while she couldn’t.

Unsure what else to say, except please pray for her son- Colin, her husband- Carey, her sisters, brother, parents and everyone who knew and loved her.

This world lost someone that we shouldn’t have.

WHAT IS #LightUpMBC ?

The #LightUpMBC campaign is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness and funds for metastatic breast cancer (MBC) research to benefit METAvivor. Held annually in October, the campaign partners with hundreds of iconic landmarks around the world to illuminate in the symbolic MBC awareness colors of green, teal, and pink. By uniting patients, families, and supporters, #LightUpMBC shines a spotlight on the urgent need for more research and resources to improve outcomes for MBC patients.

#LightUpMBC Live is a dynamic virtual event that serves as the centerpiece of the #LightUpMBC campaign, bringing together the metastatic breast cancer (MBC) community and its supporters for an evening of storytelling, inspiration, and impact. Hosted annually on October 13 on Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, this live-streamed program features powerful stories from MBC patients and their families, musical performances, and appearances by special guests who amplify the mission of raising awareness and funds for MBC research. #LightUpMBC Live provides a platform for education and advocacy, highlighting the urgency of funding scientific breakthroughs for the most advanced stage of breast cancer.
