I remember walking through the store with my two little kids buying a few things before heading home.  I knew my two-year-old niece, Laney, was at the doctor because of a fever and a rash.  I will never forget the moment my phone rang and my mom told me that my sister and brother-in-law were told to take Laney to Children's Hospital to see an oncologist that would be waiting for them to arrive.  Cancer.  Acute Myeloid Leukemia to be more specific.  Over the next almost 2 years Laney would endure pokes, scans, tests, chemo, spinal taps, many nights in the hospital away from one parent and 3 siblings and the rest of us, among many other terrible but necessary things.  We prayed hard that Laney would be healed here and stay with us longer.  That was not God's answer.  She went to Him on November 29, 2016.  But we were lucky.  We were lucky enough to know her, her smile, her determination, her amazing high-pitched giggle, her stubbornness, her touch, her love.  We don't know why God took her from us but knowing why won't take away our tears because we will still miss her to a degree we cannot express.  Our job is not to understand Him but to trust Him.  We could sit back and feel sorry for ourselves but Laney would be very upset with us.  She would tell us This is borin'.  So here we are.  Running an unbelievably far distance to raise money in support of other families traveling the wretched road we once traveled, and are still to some degree traveling.
