Dr. Don McKenzie, a Canadian sports medicine specialist, challenged the prevailing wisdom that breast cancer survivors who had lymph nodes removed as part of their treatment should avoid exercising to prevent lymphoedema. He started a dragonboat team in 1996 for women with a history of breast cancer, and reported that his experiment promoted health, raised awareness of breast cancer, and “reaches out to other women and offers them a message of hope and support. It is helping to change attitudes toward ‘life after breast cancer,’ and it encourages women to lead full and active lives…”. Dr. McKenzie’s idea has spread around the world - Wikipedia reports that there are currently 403 breast cancer survivor teams in 42 countries across six continents, representing ~20,000 breast cancer survivor paddlers.

Linda and John Dyer brought this concept to Lake Champlain in 2004. Today, in addition to its breast cancer survivor team, Dragonheart Vermont has nine other teams and over 200 members, including people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds.
