In July 2018, 8-year-old Madison Martin stopped using her left arm. A trip to her pediatrician led us to a neurologist where we found out she had a “shadow” in her brain. Initially, it was considered non-urgent until the first weekend in August when she began sleeping more than normal. That very next Monday, she was admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital and after 3 days transferred to the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU to be closer to a pediatric neurosurgeon and an oncologist, where we found out that she had 2 brain tumors. After a biopsy, it was determined that she had Germinoma and would need four rounds of chemotherapy and 20 days of radiation. Between chemo rounds, she was also admitted for fevers 3 times, one time landing her in the Pediatric ICU for a week to regulate her sodium that had skyrocketed to a dangerous level. Madison has received many blood and platelet transfusions and has been so sick during the entire treatment process. While all of this sounds just awful, the nurses, doctors, Child Life Specialists, volunteers, social workers, etc. made the days a little brighter and the scary times a little less scary. All of this is made possible by the ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation. They provide the support that children and their families need during the most difficult of times! From volunteers playing Wii with Madison to bringing her coloring books and gifts, taking walks with her and explaining procedures to her to giving us gas and grocery cards, a specialist to talk to during times when we just needed to feel understood, to completing paperwork so that mom and dad could take time from work to be with Madison. There is not anything that the ladies and gentlemen with ASK can’t accomplish for a family. While we have experienced some of the worst times during the past seven months, we are proud be to an ASK family now. We are always treated as if we are family and have created the most amazing bonds with so many at the clinic and in the hospital. We are now raising money for the ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation to help make other families feel the way we now do!
