Meet our Honorary Captain - Destiny

Destiny was just 3 years old when she was diagnosed with B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on November 23, 2018. She bravely endured multiple rounds of chemotherapy, showing strength and resilience well beyond her years.

Incredibly, while Destiny was still in treatment, her dad, Matt, was also diagnosed with cancer in 2019. It was an unimaginable time for their family—two cancer battles at once, with frequent trips to the Melodies Center, two hours from home.

Building on Love stepped in to help relieve some of the financial stress. By covering essential bills, we gave the family the breathing room to focus on what mattered most: healing and hope.

Destiny was declared cancer free on February 7, 2021. A year later, on Valentine’s Day 2022, Matt heard the words “no sign of disease” and had his port removed. A double celebration of strength and survival.

One of our favorite thank-you notes came from Destiny’s mom:
“When Building on Love came into our lives, Destiny was in active treatment requiring weekly, sometimes bi-weekly trips to the Melodies Center two hours from our home. As if that wasn’t enough, Destiny’s dad was diagnosed with cancer too. Your support helped keep our family going. We had a few less bills to worry about and were able to focus on what matters most!”

We are honored to have Destiny serving as an Honorary Captain. Her story is a powerful reminder of what families can overcome when surrounded by love, support, and community.
