Jonathan, who is unhoused, lives in his van or at motels when he can afford it. He has been relying on our pantry and prompted our staff to regularly stock more on-the-go options for clients without reliable access to cooktops. Anytime he visits, he also asks for extras to share with friends in similar living situations without the means to get to the pantry.
Evelyn, who brings her young daughter and nephew, as she and her sister trade off childcare while each balancing part-time work. The visit to the pantry becomes a bright spot due to the care and compassion of our staff. The children always receive an extra toy, craft or treat, making the visit feel normal, even special, not stigmatized.
Raymond, who is homebound after a long hospital stay and working with our senior care team and referred to received DoorDash home deliveries from our pantry. He is so grateful for the convenient and direct delivery of food to keep nourished during recovery.
And the broader storms of uncertainty – increasing prices for everyday goods, the compounding effects of cuts to SNAP (food stamps) and Medicaid – all forcing those on the brink to do more with less, to choose between a meal and medication, to worry about nourishing their children before themselves.
