Every day 117 people in the U.S. die of metastatic breast cancer (MBC), also known as Stage 4, where the breast cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Funding MBC research is the only way to find a cure!
ABOUT ME
My name is Sheetal Dewan. It's been 6 years, since my de novo Stage IV or metastatic breast cancer (MBC) diagnosis in the summer of 2018. A mom of 2 really little boys, I didn't know how long or how much of my babies I would be around to see.
And yet thanks to the undying love from my family, the unfaltering support of my friends, the sound judgement of the surgeons, oncologist, radiologist, hematologist and so many drugs and treatments later I'm still here, enjoying every moment the universe has been kind enough to let me live.
Through the ups and downs of this illness; its the incredible stories of resilience of my fellow cancer patients; some still with us and some that moved on, that has given me hope.
METAvivors of NJ, Move Over Breast Cancer, the Breast Cancer Resource Center with the Princeton YWCA, Unite For Her are some of the support groups that hold us together in times when we aren't strong enough to hold our own.
Daily yoga and meditation has helped keep my faith higher than my fears and my body strong enough to withstand all that comes with the toxicity of the lifelong treatments. I have been very fortunate to have had the guidance of the best teachers and yogis. I am deeply indebted to each.
But the sad truth remains; all this works ONLY IF the treatments work. IF newer and improved treatment options continue to exist for MBC patients like me.
I hope our children and the future generation can live a healthy purposeful life free of this disease.
WHAT IS #LightUpMBC ?
The #LightUpMBC campaign is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness and funds for metastatic breast cancer (MBC) research to benefit METAvivor. Held annually in October, the campaign partners with hundreds of iconic landmarks around the world to illuminate in the symbolic MBC awareness colors of green, teal, and pink. By uniting patients, families, and supporters, #LightUpMBC shines a spotlight on the urgent need for more research and resources to improve outcomes for MBC patients.
#LightUpMBC Live is a dynamic virtual event that serves as the centerpiece of the #LightUpMBC campaign, bringing together the metastatic breast cancer (MBC) community and its supporters for an evening of storytelling, inspiration, and impact. Hosted annually on October 13 on Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, this live-streamed program features powerful stories from MBC patients and their families, musical performances, and appearances by special guests who amplify the mission of raising awareness and funds for MBC research. #LightUpMBC Live provides a platform for education and advocacy, highlighting the urgency of funding scientific breakthroughs for the most advanced stage of breast cancer.
