Please support my efforts to raise funds for metastatic breast cancer research!
I'm raising money for #LightUpMBC to benefit METAvivor!
Every day 117 people in the U.S. die of metastatic breast cancer (MBC), also known as Stage 4, where the breast cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Funding MBC research is the only way to find a cure!
ABOUT ME
I started my professional career on a traditional architecture path, but chose a road less traveled after graduating with my Bachelor of Architecture from NJIT. Upon discovering there was a specialized niche within the field of architecture after taking a lighting design elective course at NJIT, I decided to follow the light and make the illumination of architecture my calling. As well as being an Associate member of the AIA, I also am member of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), WILD (Women In Lighting + Design), and proud to serve as a Lighting Consultant for the #LightUpMBC Global Campaign. I help buildings, bridges, and monuments all across the world illuminate in pink, green, and teal to bring awareness to the need for more funding and research towards the treatment and a cure for Metastatic Breast Cancer.
Here is a little bit more about me:
Prior to starting my own company, Brett Malak Lighting Design, Inc (BMLD) in 2009, I was Director of the lighting department at Cosentini Associates in New York City. My now NJ-based firm is an award-winning, nationally certified (WBE) woman-owned Architectural Lighting enterprise that has designed and consulted on a wide variety of projects, including hospitality, commercial, high-rise residential, private residential, retail, and institutional, both domestically and internationally.
In addition to designing architectural lighting and controls, I also served on the Steering Committee for the Green Codes Task Force in New York City in the early 2000s, just as LEDs where first being introduced to the lighting world. In conjunction with the USGBC and the Urban Green Council the purpose of the group was to rewrite the building codes and help “green” the laws and regulations that governed construction in New York City.
I have often participated as a guest lecturer on the subject of lighting design, technology, and energy conservation at various architecture firms and lighting conventions, as well as schools such as Parsons School of Design, the School of Visual Arts, and NJIT. I also appeared on an episode of HGTV’s program Home Rules to explain energy efficient lighting techniques for homeowners.
WHAT IS #LightUpMBC ?
The #LightUpMBC campaign is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness and funds for metastatic breast cancer (MBC) research to benefit METAvivor. Held annually in October, the campaign partners with hundreds of iconic landmarks around the world to illuminate in the symbolic MBC awareness colors of green, teal, and pink. By uniting patients, families, and supporters, #LightUpMBC shines a spotlight on the urgent need for more research and resources to improve outcomes for MBC patients.
#LightUpMBC Live is a dynamic virtual event that serves as the centerpiece of the #LightUpMBC campaign, bringing together the metastatic breast cancer (MBC) community and its supporters for an evening of storytelling, inspiration, and impact. Hosted annually on October 13 on Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, this live-streamed program features powerful stories from MBC patients and their families, musical performances, and appearances by special guests who amplify the mission of raising awareness and funds for MBC research. #LightUpMBC Live provides a platform for education and advocacy, highlighting the urgency of funding scientific breakthroughs for the most advanced stage of breast cancer.
