About 20 years ago, Victor was diagnosed with autism. Over these years, like many parents of neurodiverse children, we faced several challenges. And, while we don't forget the hardships, it is the connections we made with the most amazing people life can breed that we remember the most. Because of his autism, we made a few friends for life and met people who forever changed who we are and how we see the world around us. Their support filled us with gratitude and fueled our journey.
Last June, Victor graduated from high school, and once again, we found ourselves anxious and worrying about what would happen next. Finding a high-quality program for adults with special needs, even in Massachusetts, is hard. I left many of the adult programs I visited feeling a mix of despair and outrage, and I could not see Victor having there the meaningful and fulfilling experiences any human being deserves.
Once again, extraordinary caring friends connected us to 3LPlace in Somerville, MA, where we found people who understand what it means to belong unconditionally. At 3LPlace , they consistently consider and promote their members' interests and unique abilities while building a caring community and encouraging self-determination through meaningful and fun experiences. Victor loves each day he is in their company, and we again feel the joy of having dedicated partners to travel the uneven roads not built for the neurodiverse travelers.
