Caren is a 17-year-old Kalenjin girl from Kerio Valley and will graduate from Daraja with the Class of 2028. She is from the remote village of Katieny, a dry and sparsely populated area where mango farming is the main source of income. Caren lives in a one-room mud-and-stone house with her parents and four younger siblings. Her father has a lung condition, and her mother works hard collecting firewood and washing clothes to provide for the family. Caren has faced poverty, hunger, and interruptions to her schooling due to a lack of fees.
Despite these challenges, she has remained determined to continue her education. In primary school, she served as a class representative. Caren enjoys athletics and debating. She dreams of becoming an accountant and believes that education is the key to empowering women and transforming communities.
To Caren, Daraja is a place where girls can grow into tomorrow’s leaders.
