Clara is a 15-year-old Kikuyu girl from Laikipia East and will graduate from Daraja with the Class of 2028. She grew up in a small village surrounded by trees that help protect the community from the prevalent wildlife in the area. Clara lives with her mother, grandmother, and two brothers in a timber house with three bedrooms. Their home is located near a river, where they fetch water, and she describes her community as supportive and close-knit.
One of Clara’s greatest challenges has been watching her grandmother fall ill. This forced her mother to stop working in order to care for her, and as a result, Clara’s brother had to leave school to help provide for the family’s basic needs. This was very difficult for Clara to witness.
These experiences inspired Clara to dream of becoming a teacher so she can help young people fulfill their dreams and gain access to education. Aside from her passion for helping others, Clara enjoys singing, reading stories, and participating in music festivals because they allow her to interact with people from different cultures.
