I've always felt my heart ache when I see evidence of homelessness - people trying to get some privacy as they sleep, folks asking for money, or a meal. I grew up with people saying "don't give them money- they will just use it for drugs or cigarettes or alcohol." Or "they could be in a shelter if they wanted." I have come to realize that neither statement is helpful, and both perpetuate stigma.

I've worked at Boston Medical Center for the past couple of years and some of the wonderful patients I work with have experienced homelessness. I walk to give people a chance when many forces are working against them. I walk to show the solidarity I feel. I walk with team BMC because I'm proud to work for such a mission-driven org.

And I will walk pushing my baby in his stroller because I want to raise him with full awareness of the issues in our community, and as someone who will grow up to serve his community.
