Hamdi is a quiet, strong girl from a remote village called Towhid in Wajir County. Her family and other community members live in simple, grass-thatched houses known as ‘manyattas.’ She lives with her single mother and two siblings after her parents separated several years ago. In the evenings, she would walk two kilometers to fetch water from a borehole. Tribal conflict and land disputes are common in this area along the Somali border due to limited fields to graze. Her mother sells milk and works as a househelp to support her children’s education.
Hamdi was a leader throughout primary school and believes she will be a light for her family. Despite the challenges she has faced, she earned one of the highest scores in Daraja’s incoming class. Her role models are Kamala Harris, Wangari Maathai, and Ilhan Omar. Hamdi will graduate from Daraja with the Class of 2026 and dreams of becoming a doctor and uplifting her family.
