Patience is a 15-year-old Kamba girl from Kitui County in eastern Kenya. She has one brother and one sister. Patience and her sister live with their mother in a double-roomed house, while her brother lives with their grandmother. She attended junior secondary school at a school located seven kilometers away and had to wake up at 4:20 a.m. to arrive on time. She was often sent home due to unpaid school fees and had to fetch water from a dam located five kilometers away.
Despite these challenges, she was the school president. Patience’s mother dropped out in Grade 8 due to a lack of school fees, and Patience believes that education will enable her to support her mother and other women in her community.
She says she believes she can achieve her dreams at Daraja and felt like kneeling down to say thank you when she was selected. Patience wants to become a doctor because there are not enough doctors in Kenya.
