Nghi Nguyen

Hi, my name is Nghi. I am a registered nurse in the state of Massachusetts. I have decided to become more active in learning more about the resources available for children with disabilities and autism. After helping my friend research about aids and resources for her child with autism, I have realized that many other Vietnamese parents are also unaware of the many available resources in the community due to language barrier and/or lack of social media useage.

VongTayChaMe Viet (the Circle of Vietnamese Parents) led by volunteer Vietnamese speaking parents of kids/youth with autism. Due to cultural differences and language barriers, many of our parents might not be well-informed about the system. This impacts the kinds of services our children receive from school and other system. At the same time, due to social stigma within our own community, many of our children/youth with autism are not still fully integrated into the community at large.

Since COVID, we have organized weekly educational training for our parents. We believe knowledge is power and we want to ensure that our parents get as much information as possible so they can be the best advocate for their loved ones. We have also organized weekly activities for our youth so they can build friendship and social skills needed for their growth. We also organized a few family events so families and communities can come together to learn from one another and to support.
